About This Calories Burned Calculator

This Calories Burned Calculator uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) methodology established by the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities to accurately estimate energy expenditure during physical activities.

The core formula is: Calories Burned = MET value x body weight (kg) x duration (hours). One MET equals the energy cost of sitting quietly, approximately 3.5 ml O2/kg/min.

The calculator also provides a heart rate-based estimation using the Keytel equation (Keytel et al., 2005), which adjusts calories based on your actual exercise heart rate, and compares results with the Harris-Benedict BMR-based method for comprehensive analysis.

MET values are standardized by the Compendium of Physical Activities, maintained by Arizona State University. Values account for activity intensity levels: light (MET < 3), moderate (MET 3-6), and vigorous (MET > 6). Age, gender, and individual fitness levels affect actual calorie burn.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories do I naturally burn?

Your body burns calories at rest through basal metabolic rate (BMR). An average adult burns 1,200-2,400 kcal/day at rest. Adding daily activities like walking (MET 3.2) for 30 minutes burns approximately 100-150 kcal depending on body weight.

How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?

Walking 10,000 steps typically burns 300-500 kcal for an average adult. Using our calculator: a 70kg person walking at moderate pace (MET 3.2) for 80 minutes (roughly 10,000 steps) burns approximately 298 kcal. The exact amount depends on body weight, walking speed, and terrain.

Is burning 500 calories a day considered active?

Burning 500 kcal through exercise daily is considered very active. For reference, a 70kg person would need to jog (MET 6.0) for about 71 minutes, or cycle moderately (MET 6.8) for about 63 minutes to burn 500 kcal. The ACSM recommends 150-300 minutes of moderate activity weekly.

Does age affect calorie burn?

Yes, age significantly affects calorie burn. As you age, you lose lean muscle mass and your BMR decreases by about 1-2% per decade after age 30. The 2024 Older Adult Compendium shows adults over 60 have 43-48% higher MET-adjusted calorie needs due to reduced metabolic efficiency. Our calculator factors in age through the Harris-Benedict comparison method.

How to trigger the fat burning process?

Fat burning is optimized at moderate exercise intensity (50-70% max heart rate), where the body uses fat as primary fuel source. At MET levels of 3-5, approximately 50-65% of calories burned come from fat. For a 70kg person doing moderate walking (MET 3.2) for 30 minutes, about 68 kcal of the 108 total come from fat. Combine with a caloric deficit for effective fat loss.

What burns the most calories daily?

High-intensity activities burn the most calories per minute. Sprinting (MET 12.8) burns approximately 597 kcal/hour for a 70kg person, while HIIT training (MET 8.0) burns about 373 kcal/hour. For sustained daily burn, running at moderate pace (MET 8.3) for 60 minutes burns about 387 kcal for a 70kg individual. Longer durations at moderate intensity often yield more total burn than short intense sessions.
